Character Information:
Name: Marinette Dupain-Cheng
Canon: Miraculous Ladybug
Canon Point: episode 23, Jackady ; because Marinette has been missing class running around saving Paris as Ladybug, she's been grounded and can't go to a taping of game show that she was invited to by Nino. Of course, that's where someone gets akumatized so she has to break those rules anyway.
Age: 15
Type of Character: Canon
Reference: wiki page for her and also here is a breakdown of the plot of each episode!
Setting Concepts:
Miraculous: An item, often in the form of jewelry, that can give the wearer what are essentially magical powers. There's a transformation involved, a super power move is gained, and once a person has this miraculous they are also able to meet and learn from the kwami assigned to that item. In Marinette's case, her miraculous are earrings and her kwami buddy is Tikki.
Kwami: So that begs the question, what's a kwami? They're something of a guardian of their particular miraculous and have been hinted to be thousands of years old, with each kwami working together with multiple Ladybugs or Chat Noirs throughout history. Their job is to help their partners learn their skills correctly, and Marinette is lucky when it comes to her kwami. Tikki is painfully sweet in the same way Marinette is, constantly giving Marinette validation and cheering her on, inspiring her to do her best. That support is part of what makes Ladybug so strong, because without Tikki Marinette often struggles with self worth issues.
Akuma: These are what spawn the monster of the week for Miraculous Ladybug. A person becomes akumatized when, after they are humiliated or hurt in some way, the antagonist of the show, Hawk Moth, reaches out to them to offer revenge in return for the person helping him to get Ladybug and Chat Noir's miraculouses. When the person agrees, Hawk Moth sends out a corrupted butterfly called an akuma that possesses an item of importance to the person he's teamed up with. This akumatizes them, transforming them into a villain in their own right with their own powers. To defeat them, Ladybug must identify what item is being possessed, destroy it to release the akuma, and then use her power Lucky Charm to purify it.
Lucky Charm: This is Marinette's superpower, and it's incredibly important. When she uses it, her yoyo transforms into an item needed to defeat her enemy. Sometimes it's a towel, sometimes it's a coin, but often it doesn't make much sense until she pieces together step by step. It is only ever useful in that exact situation, so once she figures that out that's all she uses it for. After she uses her power, however, she has five minutes until she detransforms whether she wants to or not, so it's a power that can only be used once before she has to leave and feed Tikki if she hasn't defeated her foe.
Purification: This is the only thing that can change a corrupted akuma back into a pure one. Even if Ladybug destroyed a corrupted item and turned a person back to normal, if she doesn't purify the akuma it spreads the corruption all across the city and makes an even bigger mess. With the power of her magic yoyo she captures the butterfly, and then uses the ability Miraculous Ladybug to repair and reverse any and all damage done to the city of Paris during the fight.
It's very Sailor Moon to be honest.
Personality: The most obvious thing about Marinette is that she is pretty much the sweetest person you will ever meet. She's a little high strung, but enthusiastic and cares so much about people that she is often the one going out of her way to stand up for them or check on them if something has gone wrong. Her home life is incredibly healthy, with a mother and father who love each other and her so much that even she knows it's a little over the top. She adores them but is easy to fluster when they fuss over her, and it only takes one look to see that's exactly where she gets her caring nature from.
There's just about a thousand examples of this, but one of the simplest ones is when, on the first day of school, Marinette brings macaroons from her family's bakery for the entire class. They don't all make it there because she's a giant klutz who falls and drops them, but they take a spill because she's just pulled an old man out of the path of an oncoming car. She even offers one to him later knowing that the ones in the box won't be enough for her whole class. She drops them again later, and when there's only one left she splits it with her new best friend Alya.
While she is primarily a very bright, happy girl, Marinette does does suffer from low self-esteem. She doubts herself often, considering herself not good enough to be Ladybug, not talented enough to make an impression in everyday life, and it often takes an outside force in the form of Tikki or Alya to talk her up and get her to realize no, she's strong and great and as long as she tries she really can do anything she puts her mind to. It's something she's still learning to internalize and it'll be awhile until she can think of herself that way, but the support of Tikki and Alya is helping her get there.
Marinette's hobby is fashion design, and it's something that she incorporates into nearly every day. She always has her sketchbook on her just in case inspiration should hit her, and it's filled with some pretty impressive ideas. She's designed much of her own clothing, a kind of safe to keep a matching diary in, and even glasses that impress her favorite rock star. She's able to express herself through her designs in a way she might not be able to otherwise, and finds validation in that when her design are praised or requested. For example, a hat she designs wins a contest held by one of the biggest fashion experts in Paris, Adrien's father, and it becomes a sign to her that she is good at something, one that she can't deny.
The other side to Marinette is, of course, Ladybug, and there is a noticeable difference between the two. While Marinette may hesitate and doubt herself, when she's Ladybug she is in control of herself and her feelings and there's just about nothing that can stop her. She's confident, strong willed, and more than a match for any of the civilians who have been akumatized. She's good at what she does and she knows it, and being the only one who can do it gives her the confidence to keep going.
Unfortunately, she also tends to be so firmly set in her ways that she disregards advice that's actually quite good. She thinks she knows best, and so she does things her way and only admits she's wrong once her way has failed. Every single time this has happened, though, she's shown real remorse and disappointment in herself, has always apologized from the bottom of her heart for her mistake. She does her best to grow as a person, and every episode where she loses sight of her loving nature ends on the note of her acknowledging what she's done wrong and promising to change.
This is a trait that follows over into how she behaves as Marinette, and it's almost exclusively something that gets triggered by Chloe. Chloe absolutely brings out her bad side, and while she's often the only one who will stand up to her, which at times can make her just as much of a bully as Chloe if she takes it too far.
Still, the main trait Marinette shows is a never ending ability to care for people. Her mistakes are made up for by trying to fix what she's done, learning from the experience, and putting all of that into growing into a strong young woman who can save all of Paris with her partner Chat Noir.
Which brings us to that partnership. Marinette is not graceful on a good day, but when Adrien is introduced to the picture she becomes an absolute mess of word salad and nervous giggling. Her crush on him is intense, to the point of envisioning their life together complete with how many children they will have, what their children's names will be, and even what kind of adorable pets they're going to have.
It didn't start out that way, however. When they first met, Marinette caught Adrien trying to take gum off her seat and immediately assumed he was the one who put it there because of his friendship with Chloe. If you associated with her you must be a jerk, right?
It doesn't matter how many times he tells her she got it wrong, either, she gets so stuck to the idea that because he's friends with Chloe there's nothing redeemable in him and throughout the entire episode, she's cold and dismissive of him. It's not until she's stuck waiting for the rain to stop that he has the chance to talk to her and tell her exactly where he stands, how all of what he's going through is new, that she finally sees him as Adrien the good guy.
And then her crush starts, and it never stops. Over time she gets better at talking to him, but he still flusters the crap out of her. She thinks he's flawless and great, but that doesn't transfer over to Chat Noir. She does appreciate him, he's her partner after all, but his flirting is something she tolerates more than anything else. She has no romantic feelings for Chat Noir because she's in love with Adrien.
IF SHE ONLY KNEW, RIGHT?
Appearance: As Marinette and as Ladybug
Abilities: As Marinette, there's not much physical that she's good at. She does seem to be able to run long distances without tiring, but half the time she trips, so it's sort of a toss up on whether or not she's actually athletic in any real way.
As Ladybug, though, her powers are as follows:
Strength and Agility: You have to be particularly strong to be able to swing from the end of a magic yoyo, and it's something that Marinette masters surprisingly quickly. She uses her yoyo to swing from the rooftops of Paris in the same way Spider-man uses webbing, and with the same kind of agility to go with it. She's extremely talented at parkour too, and that's often how she gets around Paris quickly.
With this also comes the ability to take a lot of damage and not be harmed. It's possible the Ladybug suit is to thank for this, because otherwise that time she got chomped on by a dinosaur would have really sucked.
Powers: As stated before, Marinette has two main powers, Lucky Charm to create the item needed to defeat her enemy and Miraculous Ladybug, which allows her to return destroyed buildings and other damage to the state it should be in.
Inventory:
- Her miraculous, a pair of earrings that just look like plain black studs when they aren't being inhabited by Tikki.
- Who is also coming with her. While Tikki does have her own personality, her existence is tied to the earrings that Marinette possesses, so it's literally impossible for one to go somewhere without the other. In canon Tikki goes to great lengths to avoid other people noticing she's real, and will pretend to be a toy and not move if she does happen to be spotted. Because the existence of miraculouses is supposed to be a secret, Tikki will never speak to anyone other thank Marinette.
- a bag with her journal, school books, and cellphone.
- her Ladybug outfit comes with a magic yoyo, and is something that can only be accessed when she has transformed via Tikki.
- and of course, her everyday outfit which is a white shirt with a flower design on it, a black jacket, pink jeans, and a pair of pink flats.
She really likes pink okay
Soul Gem: a hair comb set with a dark red gem.

Third Person:
"Okay, Marinette, here we go."
Okay, she might be talking to herself a little, but that's fine. That's fine! She's just trying to get her thoughts in order, and it's not like there's anyone around that's going to judge her for it.
Or ask questions.
Or think she's lost her mind. It's fine! And anyway there is definitely a method to her madness.
"Okay. I've introduced myself as Marinette, and no one knows about Ladybug yet." Or, more accurately, no one knows about Ladybug from Marinette. There might be a certain someone out there who can't keep his mouth shut. "Soon I'll have to greet everyone as Ladybug too, but I should wait before I do, right?"
This time, though, she's turning to look at the little pink bug-like creature that's been watching her with an intense sense of affection. As soon as it's clear she's invited to the conversation, she flies up into the air to circle Marinette.
"That's a good idea, Marinette. That way, hopefully no one will figure out you're the same person." The kwami says, clearly proud, and she settles onto Marinette's shoulder after one more turn around her. "And Chat Noir, he'll be excited to see you."
"Oh, don't remind me." With an exaggerated sigh, Marinette drops onto her bed, upsetting Tikki for only a moment before she drifts back down to sit on Marinette's forehead. "It's going to be oh bugaboo this and my lady that before you know it."
The kwami, though, sees right through this. "You'd miss him too if you had been away for so long."
To this, Marinette really doesn't have an argument she can make that wouldn't be lying. That's something she's been thinking about, being stuck here alone without her partner, with nothing at all familiar. She had been excited to see Adrien on arrival, but of course she had been, it's Adrien. She's still going to be content to watch him from afar, but Chat Noir will be different.
She can talk to him without mumbling like a fool or falling over her own feet, and there's a kind of comfort in that. Without realizing it, she's started to smile a little, and Tikki hovers over her with an equally charmed smile.
"See? You do miss him."
Network:
[Alright, she's got this, she can totally do this. Not for the first time, Marinette is incredibly glad people talk to each other here through things that she cannot hope to drop. Because if it was something like her phone?
Yeah, she would have dropped it by now. As it is, she's smiling brightly into the screen as she waves.]
Hello! My name is Marinette and I just got here!
[Yes thank you Marinette that is very helpful.]
Oh. That's probably obvious. Well, it's true! And I can sort everything out on my own, but- well, I don't have much money yet. I was wondering, where is somewhere I can go that has inexpensive foods? I'm not picky, but if there are cookies that would be wonderful.
[Gotta feed that kwami, after all.]
Thank you!
